Invisible

At work I try to stay to myself for the most part, but now I am feeling invisible...

We had an open meeting the other day and on a few occasions when I had something to say, someone would talk over me like I never said anything. It got to the point where I just sat there blank. I am not going to talk over you. My supervisor noticed what was going on and asked me if I still had something to say. I was so annoyed by that point I said no and let them talk.

Yesterday my computer system went down. I told the IT dude my issue. He said he'd get up with me. After awhile he never came so I called him so he wouldn't forget about me. He had forgotten me and apologized. While he was in my office one of the downtown IT guys walked by and they started talking laptop stuff. Our IT guy told the downtown IT guy my issue. The downtown guy said he thinks he can solve my issue. He had never done the process but he knows how to. They both walk out my office talking laptop stuff. I wait and wait and wait. I even reboot a few times to see if he has fixed the issue. I read a few blogs, check my email, and reboot one more time to see that the problem still hadn't been solved. I get up to find our IT guy or the downtown one and they are both gone. I went to my supervisor to let her know why I have been down for so long (they have access to a shit load of info and I didn't want her coming in my office asking me why I wasn't working for so long) and she makes a few calls and at 5 o'clock I am back on track and worked my last hour. The downtown IT dude that fixed the problem said that the other downtown dude may have forgotten about me...right after our IT dude did.

Right now there is an icecream fund raiser going on in the lobby. I don't sit too far from the lobby so when they were setting up I heard my coworkers say that they were going to pay for management and July birthdays. When the fundraiser started I stayed at my desk cuz there were a lot of people. Every now and again I would hear "your icecream has already been paid for" then a "thank you". They even paid for someone whose b-day is 8/12. I paid for my own. Would it have been out of place to say "Hey my b-day was yesterday. See look at this list of birthdays everyone has on their desk! It really was my birthday yesterday." *sigh*

I like being low key at the job but jeez...

Woman quit being invisible before I get my brick. Sure I'll have to Fedex it so the brick will be extra angry when it finally hits you. X(

I hope you e-mailed your supervisor the suggestions you had. People are rude and inconsiderate. Sometimes you have to show some teeth before people respect you.

Tell them your birthday was yesterday and get you some free ice cream. It's the least they could've done since apparently they didn't get you cake and ice cream yesterday.

Maybe a brick upside the head will help. I added another recent incident so make sure there is a ton of anger in that brick!

My supervisor knows my thoughts.

I don't want or need anymore icecream so no need to say anything.

Awww ladynay. Girl, don't let them run over you. I'm all for being lowkey too but you got to stand up for yourself....even if you do it in a lowkey way. I'm with freakydeaky, email your suggestions to your boss.

It's normal to have days like that...don't we all feel that way at one time or another? I certainly do. I get just as pissed as you do so I feel your pain. No advice, just let this moment pass when you're ready.

ARgal, she is aware of my thoughts.

Mistress, You??? Feel invisible sometimes? I don't believe it! LOL But nah, glad you can relate and I can't wait for the moment to pass.

You're welcome. Good people need good support. Just let me know where to pick up my backstage passes when you go on tour mmmmmkay?

We all need some ice-cream after dealing with IT. Have a bowl or two whenever you fell like it!

i've felt this way all too often, esp. this summer with my group. it's partially my fault b/c i prefer to be more of an observer than a participant.

no advice, just wanted to let you know i empathize.

ZK, I had me some and I paid for it in a different way :-(

BB, Glad a few folks know where I am coming from.

You are such a freakin' lady!! I would have probably acted a fool becasue I hate for someone to cut me off when I'm talking that burns me up.

Eventhough I am greedy as hell. I might have let the ice cream incident go, but I definitely would have been pissed at the meeting.

BTW... Happy Belated

Don't knock invisibility at the work place. It's not an altogether bad thing unless it is directly linked to an unappreciation for your contribution. We must be acknowledged for what we do in order to validate our work. We must also know how we fit into an organization and how our work furthers its mission. If we don't know how we fit, why are we there? I used to be a little upset when my birthday went unacknowledged at work until I realized I didn't cultivate that kind of relationship with my coworkers. I would participate in the celebrations of others and even took an active part in the planning, but I never really put myself out there to be fully included. I would always steer clear of the after-work happy hours because I don't like the idea of drinking with the people I work with and I DEFINITELY don't want to see them drunk. Liquor loosens the tongue and I'm not honestly afraid of what may come forth, unfiltered, from them or me, but I shouldn't fear the truth because it only helps up know how we need to operate. What did I start off staying??? LOL

GASPPPPPPPP Rodney posts TWICE on MY blog...in the same year???? Somebody take a picture! LOL

Ummmm yeah what were you saying Rodney? LOL I feel you and you may be on to something. I really don't put myself out there at work and don't hang with the majority of them outside of work.
