It's late....

and I am sorta prejudice. Really.

Pooka and I are both in need of a bed. I don't really have new bed money for the both of us, so I looked in a classified and saw where someone in Cary *a place where mostly old money lives* was selling a bed, box spring and mattress for a great rate. I email her and we exchange emails back and forth. During our exchange we give each other our numbers and she informes me her name is Lilly. My first thought was she was a white woman with a new or maybe gently used bed set that she wanted to get rid of.

So I called her up tonight and when a lady answers, I hear a strong Asian accent. When I ask for Lilly she confirms her identity and the first thing that pops in my head is that I am no longer interested in buying the bed. Simply based on the fact that she could be Asian! The other side of my brain told me just how wrong my thoughts were and I proceeded to speak with Lilly about the bed. I have made arrangements to see the bed after Pooka's doctor's appt. tomorrow. To be completely honest, I am still iffy about buying the bed. It bothers me enough that I may be buying a used mattress, but a used mattress from a non American doesn't make me smile very hard. My reason's are wrong and I know it! I pray that this bed looks outstanding and possibly still has the plastic on it. I don't wanna risk a great deal on something because of the subtle prejudices that reside in me.

I really should be going to bed. Pooka has an 8 o'clock appt. for shot's and school check up and then I gotta go back to school for some program thingamawhatsit. I already told my supervisor that I may not show up tomorrow and I have to leave early Friday for Pooka's 12 o'clock dentist appointment. It's sad but Pooka's been here a few days and I haven't got to spend much time with her. *eye roll*

I think we all have a little prejudice in us. Come on think about it, I love my black folks, but I clutch my purse a little tighter and may cross the street when I'm downtown. And I freecycle..but only with folks in certain areas of town because I have a perception that maybe in certain parts of town, they may be trying to get rid of stuff cause it's torn up. We all have preconceived notions about someone/something. Knowing that, we have to work harder at trying to quench those stereotypes. Good post, Sis! Thanks for keeping it real.

Truth be told, the better mechandise is in the neighborhoods that have more money. Just look at the thrift store off of MLK then look at the one off of Lilly Pad lane. LOL

Just for the record...the bed looked a MESS!!!! Stained up mattress and stuff falling off the bed! She should be trying to get bulk trash to come get it than trying to sell it! This opinion has nada to do with her race, which was Asian like I thought.

I don't think that there is one person out there who has not had at least one prejudice thought before...
