Yesterday in my Abnormal Psyche class I sat and listened to some of the most ignorant bunch of crap that I have heard in a little while.
Two of the disorders that were discussed were anorexia/bulemia and gender identity disorder....
When the professor mentioned that the occurrence of eating disorders in black men are rising, a student mentioned that she thought it was partially due to the changing image of the black man in society. Mainly metrosexualism....within seconds this was a discussion about the DL brotha *sigh with me everyone, you know how this convo's go*. So in the mist of the convo I decided to speak and ask the question "What about the DL woman?" LAWWWWWWWWWD one person actually said that in comparison to the number of DL men to woman, DL woman don't exist! That was my cue to go back to keeping my mouth closed and go back to simply listening. Then things REALLY got interesting when gender identity disorder came in the mix. The majority of my class are juniors and seniors, so that makes most of them somewhere between 20-22 and I am scared! STD's are transferred by sex with anybody, not just a innocent girlfriend or wife that has a man that cheats w/a man. He could have caught that same stuff from a mistress! I mean come ON women cheat too...and sometimes it's w/other woman! *gasp*
Not all bi/gay men break their wrist, have a twang in their voice and a switch in their hips! *gasp*
Not all bi/gay woman dress like thugs and where braids *gasp*
But that's simply unheard of......

everybody gotta be held accountable for their actions, including holding onto beliefs that have not one ounce of truth to them. i hope you busted their asses for their ignorance.

Damn what a discussion in class! Some people really need a dose a realiaty and intellegence. For real!
There is not point in even arguing with people when it comes to issues of sexuality and gender identity. But I do appreciate you for speaking up and out about them.
I was reading a blog sometime ago by a gay black man that the 'DL' is simply the closet. By giving terming it the Down Low, its a way to sensationalize something, to get people hyped up and give them something to worry and talk about. I'm no expert but I really do believe that there is nothing new under the sun. The term has just given the issue new life in a new tainted, distorted light.
And I'm glad you said it, women cheat too. Women sleep with women, and women can pass stuff along to women too.
I try to never have the "DL" discussion with people because it pisses me off like nothing you can imagine.

TDRT - The only thing that came out my mouth was asking about the "DL woman" that from what I heard does not exist! LOL
Nay - There is a female in my class who don't get that bi/lesbian women can't tranfer stuff like anyone else! I mean the way she was talking it was like STD's should be called BGMTD's *BiGayMaleTransmittedDisease*. I still can't believe that I was in a university classroom with university students and hearing some of the things I heard. It was way beyond sterotypes!
