My mom and the room mom

My mom told me this morning her plan now is to leave at the end of December 2010. I told her I don't think she'd last that long! My mother is the queen of changing her mind.

My mom has also been in my closet. Yesterday I saw my bedroom shoes in the living room when I know for certain they were in my closet. When I asked Pooka why my shoes where in the living room she said "grandma had them on". This in itself isn't an issue for me. The issue is I am a territorial person and unless I give folks permission to be in my room, I don't want people in there. Very simple. I do understand that my space is small, but everything she needs is outside of my room and nothing she needs is in my closet.

Yesterday was the first PTA meeting and adult open house. The adult open house was for the parents to get more details about what's expected from the children, goals, and all that good stuff. I am afraid for Pooka cuz in 3rd grade they begin taking standardized tests and they are expected to know A LOT!!!!! When the teacher broke down just the math concepts they had to master, us parents were looking at each other like "OMG". So I really got to do my part at home to help Pooka get this overload of information locked down.

While at the open house I did a crazy thing...I volunteered to be the room parent! So now instead of going to the hospital on Monday mornings, I go hang out at Pooka's school! It's just for an hour or so so it shouldn't be that bad. We'll see how it goes. In being the room parent I've been given an assignment of providing/teaching 3 learning experiences for the children. Being that I am not the most kid creative person in the world I wouldn't mind comments or suggestions on cool, inexpensive, learning experiences I can provide for 3rd graders. Last year a parent did a learning experience about recycling that was kinda cool. I don't want to repeat that though. I know I have some innovative, creative, people and teachers that read this bloggy blog from time to time and I would love to pick your brain for some ideas. Any help is appreciated.

Damn Ladynay, you gone have to put your mama in check about your space. lol

They had open house at the school next door to where we live yesterday too.

I hate standardize tests and absolutely suck at them.

Hmmmmmmm, learning experiences for 3rd graders. Okay so I had to google something because I couldn't think of anything off the top of my head. This project (on how to grow salt crystals) is something I wish I could have done when I was 8. :)

Yeah, we talked about it this morning.

Glad to hear the nation is synched! LOL!

I co-sign that! For the first time ever, Pooka has been introduced to the ever popular scantron! I told her last night to get used to doing tests on them! LOL!

Girlllllllllllll that site rocks! I printing out some other stuff already! I had to stop browsing cuz I need to start doing my actual job! LOL!

Yeah, 1st and 3rd grades are definitely the grades when kids have to step it up majorly. They have to know a lot, but it's manageable, esp. if they have a solid foundation from the previous grades.

I'm drawing a blank on learning experiences... but, a good place to start is to ask the teacher what they're working on in class, so that you can build from that. with the focus on standardized testing teachers sometimes aren't able to do the cool and fun stuff.

BB, see that's one of the things that scares me about Pooka! Math has never been one of her strong suits. Right now she is at the point where she can work the problem and get the right answer, it just takes her awhile. Now they want to throw this all this other stuff on her and I don't know how she's going to react. The other subjects are a breeze for her, it's just that darn math!

Yay! I can be the do cool stuff room parent! :-D

O's school open house and PTA meeting was yesterday too. They also talked about 3rd grade standardize tests.

I'm drawing a black on learning experiences. I had to take to my twitter pages to give me objects that start with an I that O can take to school for show and tell. lol

Let your mama wear your slippers or whatever! Meanie! Just kidding. I hope she didn't punk you out like Pooka did with that ice cream. :oD

Just couldn't be down a job could you? You really were afraid of getting your Jamaican card revoked.

I think you should teach the kids about the power of the pimp hand and proper brick handling techniques. Also if there are any Albino kids you can teach them some self defense techniques. I heard hate crimes against them are pretty high in your neck of the woods. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Learning ideas- homemade ice cream in a zip lock baggy is fun and yummy! Also, grow a plant or something. Get the kids to set up a fish tank and learn about responsibility and feeding etc... who knows! ha!

As for Pooka! You always forget her auntie here was phenomenal in math... although Im a little rusty, i could probably get a refresher by reviewing her math book! Just keep me posted.

Aww, being a room mommy sounds like fun. I'm not sure about the learning experiences, but I remember when I was that age going on "nature walks" (really just walks along a trail near the school) and looking at the fall leaves. We thought it was the best thing EVER. You might want to try something like that.
